GSM is to towels what thread count is to sheets: the headline number in every specification. Getting it right means towels that feel generous to guests without slowing down your laundry.
What GSM means
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures the weight - and therefore the density - of the terry fabric. A higher GSM towel has more cotton in every square metre, usually as denser or longer loops, which makes it feel thicker and plusher and lets it hold more water.
Common hotel towel weights
| GSM | Character | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 550-600 | Absorbent, lighter, dries quickly | Business hotels, high-occupancy rooms, humid climates, hand towels |
| 600-700 | Fuller and softer | Upscale rooms and resorts |
| 700-900 | Dense and plush | Luxury suites, spas and bath mats |
The trade-off: plushness vs drying time
Heavier towels feel more luxurious, but they take longer to dry, cost more to launder and weigh more in every laundry load. For a property that turns over hundreds of rooms a day, the difference between 550 and 700 GSM adds up quickly. That is why many hotels specify a practical weight for standard rooms and a heavier one for suites and spa areas.
Construction matters too
Two towels with the same GSM can perform very differently. Look at:
- Yarn - ring-spun combed cotton gives a softer, stronger loop.
- Hems and selvedges - double-stitched hems and reinforced side edges resist fraying in commercial laundering.
- Borders - a woven dobby border adds structure and a finished look.
Bath mats are heavier
Bath mats need to absorb water from wet feet and lie flat and stable on a tiled floor, so they are typically heavier than towels. Our standard hotel bath mat is 900 GSM.
Hibernation bath linen ranges from 550 to 900 GSM. Our standard bath towel is 70 x 140 cm at 600 GSM and our hand towel is 40 x 70 cm at 550 GSM. Explore hotel towels or request a quote.
